Massage during pregnancy
Massage during pregnancy can be very beneficial to both mother and to the baby. It can help to support both emotionally and physiologically the mum to be while her body adjusts to the major hormonal changes which are occurring during this time. Massage can help ease many of the discomforts and ailments commonly associated with pregnancy. These can include backache, digestive problems, lymphatic drainage, anxieties, tension and sleeplessness. It is also believed that baby can greatly benefit from massage as the 'feel good' endorphins released by the mother during the treatment are passed onto the baby.
What happens during a treatment?
As a new client, you will be taken through a Client Consultation Questionnaire to help me find out about your general state of health, wellbeing, life style and to help me to understand any pregnancy specific concerns you may be facing. You will then be assisted to the couch in the position which is most comfortable for you, supported with pillows and, suitable for your stage of pregnancy. Your comfort will be monitored at all times and it is the aim that the treatment be very pleasant and soothing. After the treatment, you are offered a glass of water and you are able to relax until you feel ready to face the outside world.
Do I need to get permission from my obstetric caregiver?
It is strongly recommended that you inform your obstetrician/midwife/G.P. that you wish to have a massage treatment. If they have advised you not to receive complementary treatments on medical grounds, naturally it would be my duty to respect their wishes. While massage is generally regarded as safe to have during pregnancy, you may like to wait until the first trimester has passed and the pregnancy is established before embarking on any complementary therapy treatment.
Please note: Massage is intended to 'complement' conventional medicine and should not be regarded as a substitute for medical and obstetric care.
